Los Angeles - Tablets are the Father's Day gift of choice for the tech-inclined, a new PriceGrabber survey shows.

Of those planning to buy their dads a CE device for Father's Day, 48 percent will make it a tablet, 23 percent will choose a smartphone, 20 percent will purchase a computer, 13 percent will buy a camera, and 12 percent will give him a TV.

CE trailed most other product categories for dads' day, including tools, auto accessories and appliances (41 percent); hobbies/sports (23 percent); and clothing/accessories (21 percent). Another 21 percent cited CE within the catchall category of entertainment, which also includes music, video games and movies.

Seventy percent of consumers queried said they are planning to spend the same amount on Father's Day gifts as they did on Mother's Day gifts this year, with 57 percent looking to spend less than $100.

Of the 4,450 online respondents, 56 percent said they will buy from online stores via their computers, while 36 percent plan to buy in brick-and-mortar stores. Only 2 percent of survey respondents plan to purchase gifts from an online store via a mobile device.

Free shipping was the most popular retail enticement (59 percent), followed by price cuts (48 percent), sales (43 percent) and coupons (36 percent), while 18 percent of shoppers said they will not be influenced by retailer tactics.

"Consumers are still budget conscience and will look for deals when Father's Day shopping this year," said Graham Jones, general manager of PriceGrabber, an online shopping portal. "Even though most shoppers plan to spend under $100 on their dad this year based on our survey data, it's not surprising to see that retailer tactics such as free shipping, price cuts, sales and coupons will help sweeten the deal when enticing consumers to buy gifts for dad this holiday."

Most shoppers plan to purchase their gifts two weeks prior to the holiday, while 28 percent said they will buy gifts one week prior, 16 percent will purchase gifts one month in advance, 14 percent will make their purchases three weeks prior, and 12 percent expect to buy gifts within 48 hours of Father's Day.

The survey was conducted from April 10-23 among online shopping consumers.
